Naharlagun, 5th September — In a significant development for the preservation of indigenous culture, the Galo Welfare Society (GWS) has successfully acquired Geographical Indication (GI) numbers for various traditional Galo textiles, as announced by the Galo Indigenous Faith and Cultural Council (GIFCC). One of the key textiles registered under the GI is the “JESE KOORE” or “TAKOM LEBOK,” a sacred garment worn exclusively during AI-AGAM rituals. In a communication addressed to the President of the Galo Welfare Society, Dr. Kirki Ori, the Working President of GIFCC, emphasized the sacredness of these textiles, urging non-believers of the Galo ancestor faith to refrain from using or promoting these culturally significant garments. The letter highlights the importance of preserving the dignity of JESE KOORE textiles, which are deeply rooted in Galo ancestral and religious traditions. This GI registration marks a significant step in recognizing and protecting the cultural heritage of the Galo tribe. Dr. Ori expressed hope that the community will respect the spiritual and cultural significance of these textiles, thus preserving social harmony and peace. This recognition not only safeguards Galo traditions but also elevates the indigenous craftsmanship to new heights on a national and global platform. The move is seen as a positive stride toward maintaining the integrity of the Galo tribe’s ancestral practices, ensuring that their heritage is respected by future generations.
